They will also deal with social geographical methods for understanding population density, urban flows, economic disparities, transportation, and built environments. Students will analyze and compare what they understand about Japanese culture with other, more familiar environments. Taught in English
Narrative:
Although I has studied the Japanese language in high school and enjoyed watching anime and reading manga previous to that, this class and JAPN 311: Social Issues in Japan were my first real introduction to the Japanese culture. JAPN 314: Japanese Visual Culture and & Media satisfied the MLO 2.2 that I took in the spring of 2013. Through the entirety of the JAPN 314 course I was able to widen my scope of Japanese pop-culture and the history of how this culture began. Through the use of various essay assignments, group projects, and in-class group discussions, I was able to further develop my analytical and critical thinking skills pertaining to the Japanese pop-culture. I believe that my final portfolio project in JAPN 314 illustrates my development of the Japanese pop-culture. I combined everything that I had learned in the semester into one comprehensive presentation with a script (Sample 1 & 2). In this class I studied a great deal about Ukiyo-e paintings. Before the class I had never heard of them, but once I had completed the class I had a pretty good understanding of them and how they impacted the present-day Japan. In the JAPN 314 class we talked about a wide variety of topic such and anime, manga, traditional arts, Tokyo, cinema, and music. Because we talked about a variety of subjects, it felt like we just touch the surface when it came to learning about these topics. If I have more time I would like to delve into some of the subjects more seriously that I have an interest in. To gain more knowledge on these subjects I think my study abroad in Japan this fall will increase my knowledge in some of these subjects.
