WLC 400: Major capstone
Course Description:
Students work with the instructor and WLC faculty advisors to research, synthesize, write and present their Capstone projects. Students will also assemble a Graduation Portfolio reflecting how each MLO was met. This course is required for all Japanese, Spanish and World Languages and Cultures majors.
Narrative:
WLC 400: Capstone is the culmination of all I have learned and acquired from previous Japanese language and cultural classes at CSUMB. This class was also conducted in conjuncture with the Spanish major students. Although officially this class fulfills the the requirements under MLO 2: Research and Technology, being that it cannot be completed without an advanced level in Japanese language and culture, I feel that this class also fulfills the requirements under the other four MLOs of "Language and Communication" (MLO 1), "Culture" (MLO 2), "Secondary Culture" (MLO3), and "Culture Internationalization and Language Immersion" (MLO 5). We learned and used Japanese academic language (MLO 1), are comparing 2 different cultures of Japan and America (MLO 3), and researching the culture of those two countries (MLO 2). In the class we were effectively able to learn what search engines were best for researching our topic, get insight from the librarian Sarah Dahlin about research and citation, and we were able to practice our capstone presentations among our peers. I feel that through constant guidance throughout this class, I was able to complete. Because this was a research paper we were creating, us in the Japanese department were also required to make a survey as part of the capstone and were assisted on how to create survey through Google docs. Some example of my work in this class can be seen in the section Capstone Project.
