japn 404: Advanced japanese research
Course Description:
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in communication through oral and written presentations to finalize research project for Capstone in Japanese using appropriate media. Taught in Japanese.
Narrative:
JAPN404: Advanced Japanese Research was a class that was not a requirement for me to graduate but was highly recommended to take for the purpose of helping with the Capstone. In a sense it was a continuation of the class JAPN 403: Precapstone and focused on completing the capstone presentation and writing the research paper. I almost feel that this class helped me out with capstone more than the WLC 400: Major Capstone class did. This class fulfills MLO 4: Research and Technology in that the class required us to use technology in order to complete and turn in assignments. This class also fulfilled the requirement of developing advanced presentational and written forms of Japanese. In this class we focused on creating and practicing our capstone PowerPoint (Sample 1), so in a sense our homework was just continuing to fix up our English and Japanese PowerPoint presentations. We learned how our written PowerPoint presentation differs to how we will present the PowerPoint presentation. We also learned smaller things concerned with writing a research paper in Japanese such as how quotations and parentheses differ in writing Japanese.
I reality although this class was put into the category of MLO 4 I feel that it also covers aspects of MLO 1, MLO 2, and MLO 3. We are learning and using Japanese academic language (MLO 1), are comparing 2 different cultures of Japan and America (MLO 2), and researching the culture of those two countries (MLO 3). Overall this class was very helpful in teaching us the different writing structures found in Japan for writing PowerPoint vs writing a research paper in Japanese.
