Japn 401: Structure of Japanese Language
Course Description:
This course aims to develop basic understanding of structural features of Japanese language. Students will be introduced to basic phonological, morphological, syntactic, and discourse analysis of Japanese. Taught in Japanese.
Narrative:
JAPN 401: Structure of Japanese Language fulfills the MLO 4: Research and Technology in that it is required to use technology in order to turn in and complete homework assignments or tests. For example we had to complete a quiz that is base of speaking so we had to use the microphone to record our voices of the computer then upload it to ilearn.
I feel that JAPN 401: Structure of Japanese Language was helpful in two major ways. The first part of this class was more of a review of some grammar points that I had learned previously, but it was a good refreshment of them and I even learned some new grammar points. The second half of the class gave me insight into part of language learning I had never thought about and that was phonetics. I got to learn the American and Japanese phonetic alphabet and how it associated with both languages. This class also dealt with teaching Japanese phonology which is the sound patterns of language. In Japanese there are moras ( like syllables), the pitch accent, intonations, and onomatopoeia among others that we learned. Although it was extremely interesting learning about moras, intonations, and pitch accents they were extremely hard for me to study. They are not things you can take notes on and study later because they are all base off of listening to sounds and finding minute difference that separate them. An example of my work in this class is the jikoshoukai (Sample 1) that I presented in class.
